About Tagdale Green Ammonia

Tagdale Green Ammonia is an exciting new project approximately 3.5km north-west of Lerwick, in Shetland.

Ammonia is a common ingredient used to produce fertiliser, critical to agricultural food production, but also with important applications as a carbon-free fuel.

Tagdale Green Ammonia would produce ammonia from wastewater, atmospheric nitrogen and renewable energy helping to secure Britain’s independent supply of an important chemical.

By generating carbon-free green ammonia in Shetland, we can use Shetland’s renewable energy to its full potential. Located adjacent to the Hill of Tagdale, the site has been chosen to take advantage of a direct power supply from a consented substation and a water supply from the Lerwick Waste Water Treatment Works.

We propose construction of a new jetty in Dales Voe to allow for ammonia to be transported directly from the site by sea.

Consultation

Our plans are still at the early stage of development. We will be carrying out a pre-application consultation in November 2025 to get your feedback about our initial proposal and answer your questions about this project.

Come along to our events at Sound Public Hall or Tingwall Community Hall to find out more about this exciting project. Our virtual exhibition is also available online.

We hope to hold a second period of public consultation in spring 2026, ahead of submission of our final application to Shetland Islands Council.

Project Timeline

  • Stage 1: Site Selection

Extensive research to identify suitable sites. Pre-feasibility studies (environmental and technical) to confirm site viability for development.

  • Stage 2: Pre-Planning

More detailed studies are undertaken to further mature the project’s development. These are inclusive of further environmental assessments and a pre-FEED (Front End Engineering and Design) study.

  • Stage 3: Planning Application Submitted

Submission of necessary planning permissions to Shetland Islands Council.

  • Stage 4: Completion of Front End Engineering and Design (FEED)

Front-end Engineering Design (FEED) is the detailed stage of engineering design for the project. It will define the project in detail before construction begins.

  • Stage 5: Construction

The construction phase will include construction of hardstanding, the jetty and associated infrastructure and the equipment for ammonia production and storage.

  • Stage 6: Operation

Tagdale Green Ammonia is expected to enter commercial operation and production in 2029.
