Project updates
These are the latest project updates for Tagdale Green Ammonia.
Latest news
Further details of the proposed Tagdale Green Ammonia development 3.5km north-west of Lerwick have been published ahead of the launch of a pre-application public consultation.
Located adjacent to the Hill of Tagdale, the proposed scheme will comprise of an electrolytic hydrogen to green ammonia production facility of up to 80MWe producing approximately 150 tonnes of ammonia per day.
Ammonia is a common ingredient used to produce fertiliser, critical to agricultural food production, and with important applications as a carbon-free fuel. Tagdale Green Ammonia would play an important role in reinstating domestic ammonia production in the UK.
The green ammonia produced would be used by a wide range of industries, including as a sustainable fuel for marine shipping and to decarbonise fertiliser production, and in doing so contribute significantly to the UK’s industrial decarbonisation and energy transition goals.
By generating carbon-free green ammonia in Shetland through the construction of schemes like Tagdale Green Ammonia, Shetland’s renewable energy can be utilised to its full potential. Tagdale Green Ammonia would create approximately 20 new green jobs and will offer opportunities for the upskilling of those already working in oil and gas roles in Shetland. The project is expected to be operational by the end of 2029.
We will hold our initial public exhibitions in Shetland on 19-20 November 2025, with a further round of exhibitions expected early next year, ahead of a planning application submission to Shetland Islands Council.
Shetland Islands Council has published the Planning Advice Notice (PAN) for Tagdale Green Ammonia.
The PAN contains outline details of the public consultation events for our Tagdale Green Ammonia proposed development. Full and finalised details of these events will be communicated following any feedback received from SIC.
