About Neilston Greener Grid Park

Statkraft received consent for the Neilston Greener Grid Park in April 2022. The initial phase of the project a 50 MW Grid-forming battery project is currently under construction and is expected to be completed in winter 2024/25.

We are now proposing some changes and are submitting a Section 36 planning application to the Energy Consents Unit in mid 2024. In summary, we aim to:

increase the electricity capacity;
refine the layout and remove non-essential infrastructure

Statkraft is also delighted to be providing an additional £20K per annum community benefit fund for all of its developed Greener Grid Park projects.

Why do we need Greener Grid Parks?

Project timeline

Stage 1: Site Selection

Extensive research to identify suitable sites.

No public engagement is carried out during this time because the site may not pass the criteria required for being suitable for development.
Stage 2: Pre-Planning

We request the view of Renfrewshire Council on the level of study required. We contact local Community Councils and consultees such as SNH, SEPA and Historic Environment Scotland.

We will continue to follow all Scottish Government advice in relation to Covid-19 and focus our engagement online.
Stage 3: Submit Planning Application, and Await Decision

An application is submitted to Renfrewshire Council, accompanied by a comprehensive Planning Report and Environmental Assessments showing the results of all studies undertaken.

This is publicly available information and will be available on this project website. Interested parties such as Elderslie Community Council can formally comment on the application. As a 'Major Development' it goes before the Renfrewshire Council Planning Committee.
Stage 4: Pre Construction

If approved, the project team work towards securing contracts for the construction and procurement of the equipment to be used for the project.

During this period the pre-construction planning conditions are signed off by the Local Authority. Some amendments to the Planning Application may be requested.
Stage 5: Construction

The construction of a Greener Grid Park typically takes 18 months. Planning conditions are used to manage elements of construction.

As the construction phase commences, arrangements for the community benefit fund are discussed with local representatives.
Stage 5: Operation

The project is managed by a regionally based maintenance team, and operations are controlled by detailed planning conditions.
