About The Developer
Statkraft is Europe’s largest renewable power generator, founded in Norway more than 125 years ago. As the largest producer of electricity from hydropower in Europe we already have a number of pumped storage plants in operation in both Norway and Germany, alongside over 350 other hydropower plants, including Rheidol, near Aberystwyth, in Wales.
Statkraft develops and operates technologies such as wind, solar, grid stability, hydropower, battery storage, and green hydrogen. We have a strong presence in Scotland, including a headquarters in Glasgow, Keith Greener Grid Park in Moray, and operate several wind farms. Other projects in planning or under construction together represent at least £2bn of potential future capital investment in Scotland.
Intelligent Land Investments Group (ILI) is a leading clean energy development company based in Hamilton, Scotland. They have taken the Red John Pumped Storage Hydro project from initial conception to a consented project. ILI has established itself as one of the top energy storage developers in the UK, with a robust 4.7GW portfolio comprised of both Pumped Storage Hydro and battery storage projects.
Statkraft completed the acquisition of Red John Pumped Storage Hydro from ILI in December 2023.
About the Project
This project was granted consent under section 36 of the Electricity Act 1989 by the Scottish Ministers to in June 2021. The Scottish Ministers have also directed, under Section 57(2) of the Town & Country Planning Act (Scotland) 1997, that planning permission is deemed to be granted for the development.

We are currently in a pre-construction phase of the project. During this time, activities include site surveys and testing, completing all conditions associated with the consent and preparing the tender documents. We will establish a Community Liaison Group to maintain a regular line of communication.
Construction is expected to begin in 2026 and is estimated to take four years. Planning conditions are used to manage elements of construction such as hours of construction, delivery times and construction traffic routes.
This facility is expected to have a storage capacity of approximately 2800 megawatts hours and approximately 450 megawatts of installed electricity generation capacity.
We are very aware of the need to minimise the impact on local residents during construction. Planning conditions are used to manage elements of construction such as hours of construction, delivery times and construction traffic routes.
There are strict noise limits we have to adhere to during construction, and monitoring takes place after construction to ensure the project stays within these limits.
Local Benefits
A community fund ill be established at start of construction and for the lifetime of the project. More details on this will be commiunicated soon.
This significant development will support hundreds of jobs during construction and provide locally based permanent jobs once operational. There is also an opportunity for local suppliers to work on this project. Find out more about local suppliers' opportunities here.
Staying in Touch
We will keep this website updated as our plans progress. We are in early stages of establishing a Community Liaison Group to maintain regular line of communication with members of the community. You can use the contact form to ask to be added to the mailing list.
